The ANZ Building on Smith Street Mall was designed by Talbot Hunt & Partners in association with Don Fulton and completed in 1970.

It occupies the site of the former English, Scottish and Australian Bank's original Darwin branch, known locally as the "Tin Bank," a prefabricated iron building imported from England that was one of the earliest commercial structures on the city's main street.

The design uses a two-storey volume for the banking chamber, lit from above by roof daylights, with a considered use of half levels to separate functions and guide movement through the building.

The concrete and brickwork detailing throughout is carefully resolved, making the ANZ Building one of the more considered commercial buildings of its era in central Darwin.
