Darwin High School was formally established in 1956, initially operating from a group of makeshift buildings adjacent to the Darwin Higher Primary School on Woods Street.

The relocation to its current site at Bullocky Point began in 1963, with the school officially opening on the new campus in 1966.

The layout reflects post-war thinking about secondary education in the Northern Territory, favouring a dispersed campus arrangement that supports movement, outdoor learning and adaptation to a tropical climate.

Since its opening, the school has been renovated and expanded on several occasions to accommodate a growing student population, yet the original modernist design intent remains evident in the planning and organisation of the campus.

The Bullocky Point site itself has a long and layered history, extending back to pre-colonial times when it was used by the Larrakia people as a camping and fishing ground.

This deeper history adds an important cultural dimension to the school’s setting within Darwin’s contemporary urban landscape.
