DARWIN NT 0800

The Former Commonwealth Bank building at 22 Smith Street in Darwin was constructed in 1940 as part of the Federal Government’s Civil and Defence Works Program and stands as a rare example of early modernist architecture in the Territory.

Its design blends Art Deco influences with practical adaptations for the tropical climate, such as roof overhangs and ventilation features that help cool interior spaces.

Although later alterations have changed some of its original fabric, the building remains an important architectural marker of federal investment in Darwin before the Second World War and contributes to the historic “Banking Corner” precinct of the city.

More information about the building’s history can be found here.
