The former Police Headquarters Building at Mitchell & Bennett Streets in Darwin was a prominent civic presence in the central business district, characterised by an austere and commanding modern form that reflected its role as a centre of law enforcement and administration.

Positioned near the older police station buildings, it served as the administrative heart of the Territory’s police services in the late twentieth century, accommodating offices and coordination functions that supported policing across the region. P

hotographs from the 1970s and mid-1980s show the building’s straightforward massing and restrained architectural expression, typical of government institutional design of the period.

Its solid, utilitarian appearance emphasised function and presence in a tropical urban context.

The site has since evolved, and later redevelopment (including NT House) now occupies the location.

Heritage Status: Not Listed (demolished).
