The former Police Headquarters building at the corner of Mitchell and Bennett Streets in Darwin was designed by Middleton & Talbot, one of the southern architectural practices that established a significant presence in Darwin from the late 1960s onwards.

The building replaced an earlier police presence in the city centre that had operated from Browns Mart on Smith Street, which served as police headquarters from the 1950s until the new building was completed.

The Mitchell Street building represented a significant upgrade in purpose-built police facilities for Darwin, and its construction freed up Browns Mart to be handed over to the performing arts community, which it has served as a theatre ever since.
