The Former Reserve Bank building at 6 Bennett Street in Darwin was designed by the Commonwealth Department of Housing and Construction with John Scott as the project architect and completed in March 1968.
Its bold modernist style incorporates bronze louvres to shield windows from the tropical sun, showing an early integration of climatic adaptation in Darwin’s commercial architecture.
The building’s robust structure enabled it to survive Cyclone Tracy in 1974, after which it served a vital role as an emergency coordination and communications centre in the disaster’s aftermath, underlining its importance to the city’s resilience.
More information on the building and it’s history can be found on the Northern Terriroy Hertiage Trail website, here.
Heritage Status: NT Heritage Listed.
