Parap Laundry at 1/1 Vickers Street in Parap is a former 1970s laundromat that has been repurposed into the Laundry Gallery, an Aboriginal-owned multidisciplinary creative hub located in the Parap Village precinct of Darwin.

Originally built as a commercial laundrette, the building’s strong mid-century lines, including steel-framed windows and doors and corrugated concrete planters, reflect the pragmatic modernist design language typical of everyday commercial buildings in Darwin’s suburban centres.

Today the space is activated as a dynamic arts centre that supports both emerging and established Indigenous artists, hosting exhibitions, workshops and events that celebrate contemporary and traditional stories.

The adaptive reuse of the former laundry highlights how modest everyday structures can be given new cultural life, reinforcing a sense of continuity between past and present within the Parap Village community.

This transformation also connects the building to broader efforts to represent Indigenous art and culture in public life in the Territory.

The building’s location within a vibrant shopping and community precinct underscores its role not just as a historical commercial structure but as a living part of urban life, bridging utilitarian origins with contemporary creative expression.
