PMG BUILDING
DARWIN NT 0800

The PMG Building in Darwin was constructed as an exchange and engineering facility for the Postmaster-General’s Department, the Commonwealth authority responsible for postal and telecommunications services before the establishment of Australia Post and Telecom.

Photographs dating from 1973 show the structure under construction, with the nearby Travelodge (later Hilton Darwin) visible in the background.

Purpose-built to support the technical and administrative needs of telephone and telegraph exchange operations, the PMG Building embodies the practical modernist approach of Commonwealth service infrastructure of the period,  straightforward, durable and designed for utility rather than stylistic flourish.

As telecommunications technology and organisational structures evolved in the late twentieth century, buildings like this played a fundamental role in supporting expanding communication networks.
