Designed by Warren Windass Assoc. in 1977 and awarded the
Tracy Memorial Award (in 1977 by the NT chapter of the AIA).
The Salvation Army Social Service Centre
is a modest modern building associated with the provision of social and welfare services in the city. Its simple form and functional planning reflect the practical requirements of community service organisations operating in Darwin during the post-war period.
The building contributes to the understanding of how modern architecture was applied to everyday civic and charitable uses in the Northern Territory, prioritising utility and accessibility over architectural display.
Lacking air-conditioning, this building compensates with deep eaves, dense vegetation and the free movement of air through the plan of the building.
Social areas such as the communal dining rooms are located overlooking the street to minimise the feeling of isolation.
Heritage Status: Not Listed.
