The Supreme Court building at the corner of Mitchell and Herbert Streets in Darwin opened in 1965 as the principal courthouse for the Northern Territory.
It was a symbol of civic confidence and institutional development during the post-war expansion of Darwin’s legal and administrative infrastructure.
The building continued in judicial use until 1991, after which the Commonwealth Law Courts occupied the premises for a period.
Although it was demolished in 2000, its presence for over three decades marked a significant phase in the evolution of the Territory’s legal architecture, illustrating the shift from earlier court facilities to the purpose-built spaces of State Square.
Heritage Status: Not Listed (demolished).
