WKM Flats at 174 Casuarina Drive in Nightcliff were designed by Wilkins, Klemm & Morrison for WKM Holdings and completed in 1974.
The building uses precast concrete panels to create crisp and carefully considered plays of light and shade across its facades, giving the complex a sculptural quality unusual in suburban Darwin residential architecture of the period.
The RAIA NT Chapter's heritage guide described the flats as "exquisitely sculpted and detailed," a measure of the design ambition applied to what might otherwise have been a routine multi-unit commission.
The building demonstrates that the Modern Movement remained a live and expressive force in Darwin residential design right through the mid-1970s, even as the shadow of Cyclone Tracy was beginning to reshape thinking about construction in the Territory.
