		<description>ABOUT

During the mid-20th century, Darwin, the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory, embarked on a journey to transform into a modern city with a truly unique architectural style, transcending its status as a mere remote outpost. This vision led to the creation of numerous buildings that not only reflected the city's innovative and ambitious spirit but also stood as testaments to the era's architectural prowess.

This website showcases a fascinating array of Darwin's mid-century architecture, some of which still exists today and others that have been lost over time. It also ventures beyond Darwin to uncover a multitude of unique and diverse architectural examples throughout the Northern Territory.

It is important to note that this list, while a significant step, is not comprehensive and should not be considered definitive. Instead, it is an ongoing exploration, a way to identify and preserve some of the modern architectural wonders throughout the Northern Territory, with the potential for new discoveries and additions.

ON COUNTRY

The buildings and infrastructure shown on this site are all built upon the unceded lands of Larrakia people, the Traditional Custodians of Garrmalang/Garramilla, the place we now call Darwin.Across Australia, First Nations peoples have built adaptive, sensitive and robust structures for tens of thousands of years. This website should not be seen as prioritising the built environment post white settlement. For more information on the built environments and First Nation peoples, the work of

Professor Paul Memmott&#38;nbsp;(anthropologist and architect) is a great resource. &#38;nbsp;

SUPREME COURTCNR MITCHELL &#38;amp; HERBERT STS
DARWIN NT 0800
PHOTOS: SUPREME COURTH OF NT &#38;amp;&#38;nbsp;FLICKR &#38;amp; FLICKR

The Supreme Court building at the corner of Mitchell and Herbert Streets in Darwin opened in 1965 as the principal courthouse for the Northern Territory.
It was a symbol of civic confidence and institutional development during the post-war expansion of Darwin’s legal and administrative infrastructure.
The building continued in judicial use until 1991, after which the Commonwealth Law Courts occupied the premises for a period.
Although it was demolished in 2000, its presence for over three decades marked a significant phase in the evolution of the Territory’s legal architecture, illustrating the shift from earlier court facilities to the purpose-built spaces of State Square.

OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH4 HARTLEY ST&#38;nbsp;ALICE SPRINGS NT 0870

PHOTOS: E FUSCALDO &#38;amp; J MARLOW

Designed by Andrew McPhee, who was responsible for several of Alice's more notable buildings, the church was officially opened on the 11th of May, 1969.

The church reflects mid-twentieth-century approaches to ecclesiastical design, favouring clear forms and functional planning suited to local climatic conditions.
As part of Alice Springs’ civic and spiritual life, the building contributes to an understanding of how modern architecture was adopted for religious use in the Northern Territory during a period of population growth and consolidation.

This project was awarded the "Enduring Architecture" award in the 2017 Northern Territory Architecture Awards.

UNITING CHURCH OFFICES
2 RAILWAY ST PARAP NT 0820

PHOTOS: E FUSCALDO
The Uniting Church Offices at 2 Railway Street in Parap were constructed in the 1960s, displaying a modernist vocabulary characterised by elevated massing and a bold geometric presence relative to their suburban context.
Though the original tenant was the Master Builder’s Association before later church use, the building’s design suggests an aspiration toward solidity and community engagement in its planning and form.
Its raised position and shading elements respond to the tropical climate while giving a sense of prominence to the administrative functions housed within.
As a work associated with mid-twentieth-century office architecture in Darwin, the building contributes to understanding how ecclesiastical organisations adapted modern commercial design for support functions.

The first photo shown is from 1981 and can be viewed on this flickr account.

RAAF BASE DARWIN
AMAROO RDWINNELLIE NT 0820&#38;nbsp;

PHOTOS: LIBRARIES &#38;amp; ARCHIVES NT
The RAAF Darwin Post Office was designed and constructed by the Northern Territory Regional Office of the Commonwealth Department of Housing and Construction, reflecting a practical modernist approach to defence-related infrastructure in the early 1970s.
Photographs from 1973 show a building with straightforward, robust forms that were typical of service buildings on military installations, where functionality and ease of maintenance were priorities.
This post office became the design basis for the subsequent Casuarina Post Office, indicating its influence on later government building projects in the region.
Its association with the Royal Australian Air Force base situates it within a broader narrative of defence infrastructure and community services in Darwin’s modern history.

ALICE SPRINGS ANGLICAN CHURCH18 BATH ST&#38;nbsp;ALICE SPRINGS NT 0870

PHOTOS: J MARLOW &#38;amp; LIBRARIES &#38;amp; ARCHIVES NT

The Alice Springs Anglican Church at 18 Bath Street features a distinctive roof form that makes the building stand out on its modest site, with straight structural beams combining to create a complex, almost tower-like silhouette.
Designed in 1982 by architect Andrew McPhee, the shape was deliberately chosen to give the small church a strong sense of presence and identity within the local streetscape.
The building demonstrates how modernist architectural ideas can be adapted for a compact religious building, using roof geometry and careful planning to create a space that is visually striking.

KARAMA, NT&#38;nbsp;

PHOTOS: TROPPO ARCHITECTS

The Green Can House was designed by Phil Harris and Adrian Welke of Troppo Architects after they won the City of Darwin’s Low-Cost House Competition in 1981.
The house’s nickname derives from its informal resemblance to a can of VB, but its significance lies in its design ethos, economical to build, energy efficient and consciously adapted to the tropical climate.
At a time when much post-Cyclone Tracy housing in Darwin had favoured heavy concrete construction, the Green Can House offered a radical alternative that embraced rather than resisted its environment.

The plan is oriented to catch prevailing breezes, with natural ventilation, open-plan spaces and high ceilings that promote airflow.
Lightweight walls of louvres allow cross-ventilation while shading occupants from direct sun, and the overall form prioritises both comfort and ease of extension over time.
This climate-responsive approach, combined with its modest construction budget, made the Green Can House a notable example of tropical residential design that contrasted with more conventional approaches in the Territory’s mid-late twentieth-century housing stock.

STURT HOUSE
LINTON ST
CASUARINA NT 0820

PHOTOS: LIBRABRIES &#38;amp; ARCHIVES NT

Sturt House on Linton Street in Casuarina once served as the Northern Territory Housing Commission offices, illustrating the utilitarian bureaucratic architecture that supported government housing functions in the late twentieth century.
Although it has since been demolished to make way for car park infrastructure associated with the Casuarina Shopping Centre, the building typified modest modernist administrative buildings of its era, with a straightforward plan and materials selected for durability and low maintenance.
Its removal underscores the rapid pace of urban redevelopment in Casuarina in recent decades, where older institutional buildings have often given way to new commercial uses.

Heritage Status: Not Listed (demolished).

ANZ BANKCNR TODD AND PARSONS RDALICE SPRINGS NT 0870

PHOTOS: LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES NT &#38;amp; J MARLOW

The ANZ Bank branch on the corner of Todd and Parsons Roads in Alice Springs was designed by Hassell McConnell &#38;amp; Partners in the early 1950s and is an attractive example of mid-century bank architecture adapted for the central Australian environment.
Later remedial works to the roof were undertaken by Andrew McPhee, reflecting ongoing investment in the building’s fabric and functionality over time.
While extensive alterations in recent decades have changed parts of the street-level appearance, elements of the original modernist design are still visible above the footpath awnings, offering a glimpse of the building’s original architectural character.
